ARUP LABORATORIES
Associated
Regional and University Pathologists, Inc. (ARUP Laboratories)
was created in 1984 by the Department of Pathology at the University
of Utah to support its academic mission and commitment to education.
ARUP initially served as a central "cluster laboratory" for community
hospitals, progressed to a regional reference laboratory, and then
became a major national reference laboratory with the capability
of performing routine to highly specialized esoteric testing.
ARUP provides
all laboratory services for the University of Utah Hospitals and
Clinics, including phlebotomy and support services. An on-site laboratory
performs a variety of high-volume, frequently-ordered tests and
procedures on a routine and STAT basis. Satellite laboratories and/or
phlebotomy services are provided at some outlying clinic locations,
as well as training and support for point-of-care testing.
ARUP also maintains
comprehensive transfusion services at the University of Utah Hospital,
Primary Children's Medical Center, and Shriner's Hospital. Donor
services include whole blood collection and component preparation,
single-donor apheresis platelet collections, autologous and directed
donations, and therapeutic hemapheresis procedures. The blood bank
provides blood and blood components for both routine and emergency
transfusions. The Immunohematology Reference Laboratory, certified
by the American Association of Blood Banks, provides complex antibody
identification and diagnostic services for the patients of the University
of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, as well as other clients.
In its dual
role as both a national reference laboratory and a full-service
laboratory for the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, ARUP
has gained a unique blend of reference and hospital laboratory management
experience. This allows ARUP to better understand the challenges
and opportunities of delivering quality patient care and to assist
its clients in their own delivery of this care.
ARUP is dedicated
to assisting clients with the managed care goal of cost-effective
testing through continuity of care, utilization management, and
outcomes management. Its expanding professional staff numbers more
than 1,000 technical and administrative employees and 60 M.D.s and
Ph.D.s who hold faculty positions at the University of Utah School
of Medicine. Faculty members are pathologists, practicing clinicians,
laboratorians, and noted experts in their respective fields.
